The ARISE Intervention
ARISE Addiction Recovery in a Supportive Environment (186 KB)"Invitational Intervention" invites the addicted individual to participate in the intervention process. There are no secrets, surprises or ambush. Everyone involved is treated with dignity and respect. The ARISE model uses the addicted individual's support system to motive them into treatment. The ARISE model helps families, organizations and communities deal with issues such as: Addiction (substance abuse, alcohol, internet, sex, gambling), Mental Illness and treatment, Resistant Elders and long term care, and HIV/AIDS and Treatment.
A major concern in the U.S. addiction field is that, in any given year, 90-95% of drug- and/or alcohol-dependent persons do not get into either treatment or self-help (National Institute on Drug Abuse Research Monograph No. 105. DHHS Pub. No. [ADM]91-1753.) This disturbing finding highlights the need for improved methods for engaging substance abusers in treatment. The National Drug Czar, John Walters, recently stated, "We need to take the courageous step of helping people find successful recovery in greater numbers."
In an NIH study, the ARISE method for helping family members and concerned others get their resistant substance abusers into treatment with was undertaken in two upstate New York outpatient drug/alcohol clinics. ARISE proved successful in getting 83% of the resistant cases. At the Albany, NY, Recovery Resource Center, 200 families have successfully used the ARISE method.

An Overview of the 3 Stage ARISE Method
The ARISE Intervention harnesses Family Motivation To Change™, utilizing the love, strength and wisdom of families, friends and co-workers to become a supportive ARISE intervention network. The network overcomes the denial, helplessness, blame and guilt that inevitably accompany the addiction. It counters the isolation and reconnects families, engendering a sense of competence and renewing hope in their future.
The ARISE intervention begins when a family member or concerned other contacts a certified ARISE interventionist and asks for help in getting a loved one into treatment. This method is designed to maximize the probability of treatment engagement while minimizing the amount of time, energy and expense required from professional staff. It works with families and their support networks in a manner that treats the addicted person with respect and focuses on a win-win for all participants. Together, families can reclaim their loved ones from addiction.
